CHAPTER 15
I always brought fresh flowers with me from the shop across from the cemetery. Today
was no different except that I had sorrow as a companion. I felt horrible for the way I handled
everything yesterday. I thought maybe if I came here and told my mother how I felt, that I now
knew what she and daddy did and why they did it, I wouldn’t be so angry inside. That I now
understood things clearly and I forgave her for the choices she made and for not being here
with me.
I stopped before her grave. It always gave me a sense of warmth; a feeling that I was not
here alone. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s New Orleans. They say anything can happen here.
Me being an immortal, I honestly believed it. I refused to see any of the local witches to
confirm that my mother’s spirit still lingered around, but I didn’t think I needed to.
Beloved wife and mother. You are my one and only, for eternity. Elilia Abrasax
It was strange looking down at my mother’s stone, knowing that she was much older than
35 when she died. They had no choice but to put basic information or people would begin to
question who she really was.
Taking in a deep breath, I could smell the scent of Spanish moss and the river not too far
off mingling with the scent of the wet earth. There was always the scent of lilac lingering
around her stone, even when there were no lilacs anywhere around. The scent would drift
around me, along with a warm, caressing sensation passing over me.
“Hi, mom, I brought you these fresh flowers.” I blinked back my tears. “I did something
really bad yesterday and I know I was wrong. I don’t know how to fix it. I know what you and
daddy did was for my protection and I’m really sorry. I didn’t understand that before, but I do
now,” I breathed in deeply, “I hurt him and grandmother out of anger, when they were only
protecting me. Please forgive me.” I was grief-stricken and emotionally overwhelmed. All my emotions came flooding in like a dam. I couldn’t hold them back any longer. It was too much to bear, too painful to control.
Down. Down. Down they came.
With full blown sobs, my tears poured down my face until I hiccupped. I screamed out in
frustration, “I wish you were here. I need you here. It’s not fair! It’s not fair!” I yelled out. I
continued to yell out until I fell to my knees crying.
A warm sensation wrapped around me as I cried for my mother and cried for all the
wrong I had done. The warmness brushed across my cheek as if it were wiping my tears away.
A surge of power appeared behind me. I knew I was no longer alone anymore. “Arielis?” whispered the voice behind me. I turned to see my father there looking down
at me with sadness in his eyes. It only broke me down more.
“Daddy!” I cried out. I cried harder and louder. Ares dropped to his knees and pulled me into his arms and rocked me back and forth.
